Over the last decade there have been many different (design) studies where the relation between landscape and tourism plays an essential part. The following projects offer good examples of this and can be used for inspiration. For further information about these projects we recommend to have a look at the list of publications given at the download section. Mare Nostrum – Mare Nostrum is concerned with one of the most conspicuous trends in globalisation, namely the rise of mass tourism, and its relation to the presence of water. Specifically it focuses on the coastlines of countries, in temperate and sub-tropical climates, that during the past centuries, decades or recent years have become a favourite destination for recreation and retreat. Starting off in 19th century Britain, coastal tourism has gradually spread over the world, with diverse cultural, environmental, economic and political implications. The exhibition Mare Nostrum was part of the 2nd international Architecture biennale in Rotterdam in 2005 Croatian Lighthouses – Croatian Archipelago, New Lighthouses is a project created jointly by the Berlage Institute and the Croatian Architects Association, financed by the Matra program of the Dutch foreign ministry, and summarized by the simple but strong motto "The Mediterranean as it could be". The project sees tourism as the generator of processes of social change, city development and landscape changes on the Croatian coast. The economic growth and progress of the Croatian society has been closely linked to the development of tourism industry, which has recognized the unique landscape of the Adriatic coast as a value that forms the tourist product. http://www.croatianarchipelago.com/ Croatian Archipelago New Lighthouses summary Newspaper Croatian Archipelago New Lighthouses Costa Iberica – Leisure — formerly a status symbol, now a given and a goal in its own right — has an enormous, and increasing impact on our cities. Over the last few decades, a combination of sun, sea, and low prices has turned the Iberian coastline into the most densely populated area of Europe — a long, stretched city, based almost entirely on tourism.
